Oink Oink Moo Moo!

14 Mar

So when a heart valve needs to be replaced it is sometimes replaced with a valve from a pig or a cow. I think it’s funny that you could have pig parts inside of your heart but that’s just me. It struck me as ironic though seeing these same items sold at an Asian market (well i found this picture from a Wal-Mart). You can buy these hearts for $13…”say What!”, however I doubt that you could get a valve replacement at my hospital and they only charge you $13 for “parts”.

Not sure if it's more disturbing that this is $13 or that it's sold at Wal-Mart

Quote Of The Day

7 Mar

I saw this quote on the way to the hospital one morning. It was on a sign in front of the morgue (of all places, but it stuck with me).

“In order to succeed, your desire for success should be greater than your fear of failure.”

The Champ

LA Marathon 2006

This one’s for you!

I have a friend who I call the “Champ”. She has earned this title in my opinion because of how she views life, and how throughly consumes every fiber of it! We did one of those personalities tests on each other, you know the ENFJ type, and she turns out to be part of this 2% of the population that has a “Champion” mentality. And it’s true she sets goals that most would just hold to a dream and carry no further, and then she actually accomplishes them! For example she wanted to run in a marathon, so she set the goal and did it! Now she’s up to having completed 5 successfully! ANd that’s just one of the amazing things that she’s accomplished, she’s traveled to exotic lands, and always strives to stay passionate about life and who she is. I could gush about her for hours!

A couple of years ago when I was in a not so fantastic place I was given a cd on goals. I used the helpful tips when I started school and before any tests. So since I’m so close to finishing one of my most major goals (successfully passing my adult echo education Woot Woot!), I’ve decided to line up a few more goals for the future (I mean it worked out so beautifully before). I think that’s the beauty of accomplishing something that you set your mind to, you want to know “what else can I accomplish?” Being able to fulfill this goal has felt really empowering as i reflect on all the blood, sweat and tears that i’ve put into it all. So my next batch of goals after I finish my 2 national exams, and complete Pediatric Echo (which will take me to the end of 2011) I plan to (drumroll please……) train for a marathon, and master the art of Thai and Indian cuisine. That’s it so far. I’m sure I’ll cook up a few more goals for myself before the years end.

Mohammed ALi declared that he was the greatest way before he was. He later filled those ambitious shoes with an unprecedented 61 fights, 56 wins, 37 by KO and 5 losses.

I thought of the “Champ” specifically this week because even thought she always called me a “champ” too, it wasn’t my personality description. But this week I heard a little voice in my head say, “Britney I think your a champ too!” Setting goals and accomplishing ‘em…watch out now!” 🙂

Thanks C for all of your inspiration, and unconditional friendship!

Don’t Give Up!

12 Feb

This is what my 3 year old tells me, “mama don’t give up!” It puts a smile on my face every time i think about it. And I’m reminded of why I am pursuing all this in the first place! here’s to you Z!

Have a great weekend!

Who Knew?

5 Feb

me in a few months 🙂

So this week I finally felt like i’m making good progress in my scanning ability. In analyzing why I feel that I am improving though I realized something else far more profound.
Well I guess I should back up and say…this week I sucked it up and started waking up at 4:30 (in the morning I know absolutely crazy!) to exercise. And I strictly watched what I ate. No Doubletree cookies for 4 days 🙂 Waaaaahhh… And the weirdest thing happened to me…I felt better! I felt more positive, more alert, and just like i could do anything! Who knew that I could feel superhuman strength from doing those 2 simple (well not really that simple) things? So on the 5th day I treated myself to a Doubletree cookie. And this morning the weirdest thing happened again, I felt less motivated, a bit down, and overwhelmed by life again! I haven’t been eating sugar so I was able to pinpoint it to the Double tree cookie. I find this to be a phenomenal discovery! The discovery that sugar (who I thought was one of my best friends) has a direct correlation to me feeling more anxious, tired, and just an overall sense of yuckieness. How could sugar do me so dirty??? I mean I’ve heard these things before, but I felt it resonate differently actually nailing it down to that blasted cookie!

So that being said, I can’t afford to be more neurotic than i have been, it’s making me, and those around me nuts! Plus I think this is the only way I can get through these tests without completely losing my mind in the process! So I think i’m going to keep this up. It’s proving to be a good thing!

What do you do to help relieve your stress?

Oh The Places You’ll Go

31 Jan

So it is my destiny to read loads of children’s books when living with a 3-year old. Most children’s books though are uncreative, and the plots tend to be ridiculously simple. So I love it when I can read a story that has a purpose, moral or just says something more then, “look at the ball spot”.
That being said a good friend gave my daughter, my new favorite book, “Oh The Places You’ll Go” by Dr Seuss (I heart Dr Seuss). And I have to say I find it really inspiring! It talks about a boy who’s off to great places, and how it’s all up to him where he decides to go, “You’ll be on your way up! You’ll be seeing great sights! You’ll join the high fliers who soar to high heights.” and then the reality, “i’m sorry to say so but, sadly, it’s true that Bang-ups and Hang-ups can happen to you. You can get all hung up in a prickley-ly perch. And your gang will fly on. You’ll be left in a Lurch”. “And I know you’ll hike far and face up to your problems whatever they are.” And then the positive reinforcement, “And will you succeed? Yes! You will, indeed! (98 and 3/4 percent guaranteed.) Kid, You’ll move MOUNTAINS!…Your off to great places! Today is your day! your mountain is waiting. So…get on your way!”

So what does this have to do with echo, school and the like??? Everything! I love that the idea that it’s all up to you where your life goes! Yeah there will be “hang-ups and bang-ups” but you can succeed and move mountains! Ok so i’m looking for encouragement anywhere I can get it! But it’s helping me conquer my mountains. Thank you Y and thank you Dr. Seuss!

Mini Meltdown Recovery

15 Jan

Y, Em & I among the chaos of crazy Catalonians!

So a friend blogged about meltdowns and when life hands you lemons she found these great variations of the the original….”When life gives you lemons, suck out all the Vitamin C and yell “EAT THAT, LIFE!” and “When life gives you lemons, alter their DNA and make super lemons!”

Her suggestions was when life hands you a meltdown melt down some chocolate and have a fondue party! And then a mojito 🙂 I like that! The best mojito i had was when me and Y were in Barcelona just before Barca won the world cup and chaos broke out in the streets. Good times!
